The functions and efficacy of Semaglutide tablets
Semaglutide 7 mg or 14 mg is a naturally occurring analog of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and is the first and only GLP-1 receptor agonist (RA) in pill form. It is taken once daily with diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes.
Semaglutide tablets lower blood sugar differently from other diabetes pills in three ways: by increasing insulin release from the pancreas when blood sugar is high, reducing sugar release from the liver, and slowing the process of food leaving the stomach after eating. Semaglutide tablets contain a unique combination of Semaglutide and an absorption enhancer called SNAC (sodium N-(8-[2-hydroxybenzoyl]amino)octanoate), which aids the absorption of Semaglutide in the stomach, making it a pill.
Semaglutide lowers blood glucose through mechanisms that stimulate insulin secretion and decrease glucagon secretion, both of which are glucose-dependent. Therefore, when blood sugar is high, insulin secretion is stimulated and glucagon secretion is suppressed. The mechanism of hypoglycemia also involves a slight delay in early postprandial gastric emptying.
Semaglutide tablets have not yet been launched in China. Its injection has been launched in China and is covered by medical insurance, but only eligible patients can be reimbursed. The price of each 3ml tube may be around RMB 1,000. The original drug Semaglutide tablets sold overseas, with a specification of 3 mg*100 tablets, may cost around 2,000 yuan per box (the price may fluctuate due to exchange rates). There are currently no generic versions of semaglutide on the market.
