Binimetinib is often used in combination with another drug called encorafenib, which is used to treat melanoma and certain types of lung cancer that have the BRAF V600E or V600K mutation, which is found by testing a patch of tumors. Bimetinib works by targeting and blocking the receptor BRAF V600E or V600K on cancer cells. In some cancers, this receptor is overactive, causing cells to grow and divide too quickly. By slowing or stopping these receptors, this drug can slow or stop tumor growth.

Doctors will test the patient's tumor to see if it has this mutation, which must be present in order to receive the drug. A kinase is an enzyme that promotes cell growth.
