Avelumab is a cancer drug used to treat adults with Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC, a type of skin cancer), when the cancer has spread to other parts of the body, and renal cell carcinoma (RCC, a type of kidney cancer), when the cancer is more advanced. Avelumab is used in combination with another cancer drug, axitinib, to treat urothelial cancer, a type of bladder cancer, when the cancer is locally advanced or has spread to other parts of the body, and in patients whose cancer does not get worse after platinum-based chemotherapy.

Avelumab contains the active ingredient avelumab, a monoclonal antibody, a protein designed to recognize and attach to a protein called programmed death ligand-1 (PD-L1) which is found on the surface of many cancer cells. PD-L1 usually attaches to cells of the immune (defense) system called T cells, preventing T cells from attacking cancer cells. By attaching to PD-L1, avelumab prevents cancer cells from shutting down T cells, thereby increasing the T cells' ability to kill cancer cells.

Avelumab is an emerging cancer treatment drug. The original drug has not yet been launched in China, so it cannot be included in medical insurance. Domestic patients cannot yet purchase this drug and can only buy it through overseas channels. The generic version of Avelumab sold overseas is sold under the name Bavencio. The price of a common 200mg/10mL box may be more than RMB 10,000 (the price may fluctuate due to exchange rates).
