What drug is canakinumab?
Canakinumab(Canakinumab) is a monoclonal antibody that blocks certain proteins in the body that affect inflammation and other immune responses. Canakinumabis used to treat certain types of periodic fever syndrome, sometimes called autoinflammatory syndrome. Periodic fever syndrome is rare and is usually a hereditary disorder caused by mutations in certain genes, usually genes involved in the production of certain proteins or enzymes in the body. With periodic fever syndrome, fever and inflammation occur without another cause, such as an infection or virus. Canakinumabis indicated for the treatment of the following periodic fever syndromes in adults and children at least 4 years of age:Cryptoprotein-related periodic syndromes, including familial cold autoinflammatory syndrome and Markel-Wells syndrome. Tumor necrosis factor receptor-associated periodic syndrome. HyperimmunoglobulinD syndrome, also known as mevalonate kinase deficiency. Familial Mediterranean fever. Canakinumab is also used to treat Still's disease in adults and systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis in children over two years of age.

If you are allergic tocanakinumab before taking this medication, you should not usecanakinumab. Tell your doctor if you have ever had tuberculosis, if anyone in your family has tuberculosis, or if you have recently traveled to an area where tuberculosis is common. Please tell your doctor if you have an active or chronic infection; a low white blood cell count; a low immune system; a history of recurring infections with HIV, hepatitis B, or hepatitis C; or if you have recently received or plan to receive any vaccinations. Before starting treatment withcanakinumabmake sure you are receiving all vaccinations. Treatment withcanakinumabmay increase your risk of cancer. If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, tell your doctor. If canakinumab is used during pregnancy, make sure that any doctor caring for the newborn is aware that this drug has been used during pregnancy. Exposure to canakinumab in utero may affect your baby's vaccination schedule up to 12 months after birth. Breastfeeding with this medication may not be safe, ask your doctor about any risks.
