What patients should take Eltrombopag/Eltrombopag ethanolamine tablets?

Eltrombopag/ Eltrombopag is a man-made protein that stimulates bone marrow cells to produce more platelets (blood clotting cells). Eltrombopag belongs to a class of drugs called thrombopoietin receptor agonists. The dose of eltrombopag is adjusted based on the patient's response to treatment. The following patients can be treated with eltrombopag:

Eltrombopag is used to increase the number of platelets (cells that help blood clot) to reduce the risk of bleeding in adults and children 1 year and older who have chronic immune thrombocytopenia (ITP; an ongoing condition that may cause abnormal bruising or bleeding due to an abnormally low number of platelets in the blood) and who cannot be helped or treated by other treatments, including medications or surgery to remove the spleen.

2. Eltrombopag is also used to increase platelet counts in people with hepatitis C, a viral infection that can damage the liver, so that they can start and continue treatment with interferon (peginterferon) and ribavirin.

3. Eltrombopag is also used in combination with other drugs to treat aplastic anemia (a condition in which the body cannot produce enough new blood cells) in adults and children 2 years and older.

4. Eltrombopag is also used to treat aplastic anemia in adults who are ineffective in other drug treatments. Eltrombopag is used to increase platelet counts sufficient to reduce the risk of bleeding in patients with ITP or aplastic anemia, or for interferon and ribavirin treatment in patients with hepatitis C. However, it is not used to increase platelet counts to normal levels.
