Silvio and Seleniso: the eponymous medicinal journey

Silvio and Seleniso are both well-known in the medical world, but their stories are different. In fact, Xivio is another name for Seleniso in the domestic market, and this drug is distributed overseas as Xpovio and other names.

Selinesol's unique mechanism lies in its ability to precisely intercept the function of exportin1, thereby interrupting the transport chain of proteins from the nucleus to the cytoplasm that are closely related to cancer cell proliferation. This innovative mode of action makes selinesol unique among anti-cancer drugs.

In July 2019, selinesol received accelerated approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) based on its excellent clinical performance, providing a new treatment option for adult patients suffering from relapsed and refractory multiple myeloma (RRMM). These patients have often been through at least four rounds of treatment and are resistant to a variety of other treatments. The combined use of selinesol with the corticosteroid dexamethasone also enhances its effect.

Just one year laterIn December 2020, Selinisol was once again approved by the FDA, this time as a triple therapy with bortezomib and dexamethasone for adult patients with multiple myeloma who have received at least one round of treatment. This series of approvals not only proves the excellent effectiveness of selinesol in the treatment of multiple myeloma, but also reflects the recognition and expectations of the pharmaceutical industry for this innovative drug mechanism.

However, like many powerful drugs, selinexol has shown some risk of side effects in clinical trials. These include more serious adverse reactions such as decreased platelet count and decreased blood sodium level. The more common side effects include nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, weight loss, diarrhea, fatigue, and abnormalities in various hematological indicators.
