The most serious side effects of dasatinib
Dasatinib (Dasatinib) is a brand-name prescription drug. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved it to treat certain types of leukemia in adults and some children, this includes certain types of chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) and acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Leukemia is a cancer that affects the blood or bone marrow (the tissue in the bones that makes blood cells). Like other medicines, dasatinib may cause side effects.
Serious side effects and symptoms that have been reported include: Severe low blood cell counts (myelosuppression), such as low white blood cell levels (neutropenia) or low platelet levels (thrombocytopenia). These conditions usually cause no symptoms but are detected by a blood test ordered by your doctor; or fever with a low white blood cell count (febrile neutropenia). A blood test ordered by your doctor can detect a low white blood cell count; or severe skin reaction, including Stevens-Johnson syndrome; or tumor lysis syndrome, a disease caused by harmful chemicals released by dead cancer cells; or severe skin reaction; or serious eye-related side effects; or severe allergic reaction.
Dasatinib may cause certain side effects, some more common than others, and these side effects vary depending on whether the drug is used alone or in combination with chemotherapy drugs. These side effects may be temporary, lasting from a few days to a few weeks. However, be sure to tell your doctor if side effects last longer than this, are bothersome, or become severe.
In general, although dasatinib has shown remarkable efficacy in the treatment of leukemia, patients still need to pay close attention to possible serious side effects during use and maintain close communication with their doctors to ensure the safety and effectiveness of the treatment.
