Is Apelix a chemotherapy drug?
Alpelisib (Alpelisib) is not a chemotherapy drug. Chemotherapy drugs affect rapidly multiplying cells in the body. This includes cancer cells, but also healthy cells. This is why chemotherapy drugs cause so many side effects. Apelvis is a kinase inhibitor and a targeted therapy. These treatments attack specific cancer cells without affecting other healthy cells.
Patients need genetic testing before taking Apelvis because the drug is only approved to treat hormone receptor (HR)-positive, HER2-negative breast cancer with PIK3CA mutations. This means that the cancer cells have mutations (genetic changes) in a protein called PIK3CA. This mutation causes PIK3CA to tell your cells to keep multiplying and dividing, which can lead to tumors.

Chemotherapy drugs usually inhibit or stimulate cancer cells by interfering with processes such as cell reproduction and DNA replication. However, this non-specific mode of action often causes chemotherapy drugs to damage normal cells while attacking cancer cells, resulting in a series of side effects. In contrast, Apelvis is a targeted drug with a more precise mechanism of action. It belongs to the category of PI3K inhibitors, specifically PI3Kα selective inhibitors. The PI3K pathway plays an important signaling pathway in regulating growth, differentiation and survival in cells. Apelvis mainly acts on specific abnormal signaling pathways in cancer cells, inhibiting the activity of these pathways, thereby inhibiting the growth and spread of cancer cells.
However, it is important to note that sometimes Apelvis may be used in combination with other chemotherapy drugs to enhance the effectiveness of the treatment. This combination treatment can be decided based on the patient's specific situation and the doctor's recommendation, and is designed to maximize the inhibition of tumor growth and spread.
