What are the side effects of taking Vigabatrin?

As a drug mainly used to treat specific types of epilepsy, Sabril (generic name vigabatrin) has many side effects and requires close attention.

1.Central nervous system reactions: Vigabatrin may have an impact on the central nervous system, causing patients to experience drowsiness or insomnia. This reaction is particularly noticeable in the early stages of taking the drug, but usually lessens over time. However, some patients may experience more severe central nervous system symptoms such as dizziness and confusion.

2.Metabolism and weight changes: After taking Vigabatrin, some patients may experience slow body metabolism, leading to weight gain. This side effect is more common in patients who take Vigabatrin long-term.

3.Gastrointestinal side effects: Nausea, vomiting, dry mouth and tongue, and upper abdominal pain are possible gastrointestinal side effects of Vigabatrin. These symptoms usually appear soon after taking the medicine, but they may appear some time later.

4.Vision problems: It is important to note that Vigabatrin may cause vision problems, including visual field defects and double vision. There are reports that some patients developed irreversible concentric visual field defects after taking Vigabatrin for a long time. Therefore, it is recommended that patients receive regular eye examinations while taking the drug.

5.Skin reaction: After taking Vigabatrin, some patients may experience skin rash and flushing. These skin reactions are usually mild, but may cause itching and discomfort.

6.Other side effects: In addition to the common side effects mentioned above, Vigabatrin may also cause mental side effects such as fatigue, headache, depression, tremor, nystagmus, memory impairment, irritability, abnormal coordination, blurred vision, and aggressive behavior. These symptoms may occur in some patients and usually disappear after the drug is stopped.
