How to use eltrombopag more effectively

Eltrombopag, also known as eltrombopag, is a drug for the treatment of thrombocytopenia. It is especially suitable for thrombocytopenia caused by glucocorticoids, immune globulin drugs or those caused after splenectomy. It can also be used to treat chronic idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura.

For most patients, the recommended starting dose is50 mg taken once daily. In patients with moderate or severe hepatic impairment, the starting dose should be reduced to 25 mg once daily.

Eltrombopag should be taken on an empty stomach, i.e. 1 hours before meals or 2 hours after meals to ensure optimal absorption of the drug. Before taking the medicine, you can drink a sip of water to moisten your throat to prevent the medicine from sticking to the wall of the mouth or esophagus. Take a sitting or standing position and take it with about 200ml warm water. Swallow the tablet whole. Do not crush or mix it into food or liquids.

If you need to take antacids, dairy products, or drugs, foods and drinks (such as milk, orange juice, etc.) containing polyvalent cations such as iron, calcium, aluminum, selenium, zinc, etc., you should wait at least 2 hours before taking eltrombopag, or at least 4 hours afterwards to avoid affecting the absorption of the drug.

Eltrombopag needs to be taken continuously and cannot be stopped at will, otherwise it may increase the risk of cardiovascular events. Liver function and platelet count should be checked regularly during medication so that the treatment plan can be adjusted in a timely manner.

In the absence of adequate well-controlled studies in pregnant women, it should be used with caution and only when the potential benefits outweigh the potential risks to the fetus. Elderly patients may need to carefully adjust the dose due to reduced liver, kidney, and heart functions.
