What are the side effects of Rytelo (Imetelstat)?
Rytelo (Imetelstat) is an U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved oligonucleotide telomerase inhibitor for the treatment of adult patients with low-to-moderate risk myelodysplastic syndrome (LR-MDS) who have transfusion-dependent anemia, require 4 or more red blood cell units for more than 8 weeks, are unresponsive or have lost response to or are ineligible for erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESAs). It is prescribed as an intravenous infusion over two hours every four weeks and may effectively improve a patient's condition. However, like other medications, Rytelo comes with some side effects.

According to Rytelo’s clinical research results show that the most common adverse reactions mainly include symptoms such as fatigue, joint pain/myalgia, new coronavirus infection, and headache. These adverse reactions occur with a frequency of ≥10% in patients taking Rytelo. In addition, there are some abnormal laboratory test results, such as thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, neutropenia, increased aspartate aminotransferase (AST), increased alkaline phosphatase, increased alanine aminotransferase (ALT), prolonged partial thromboplastin time, etc.
In addition to the common side effects mentioned above, there are some things that need special attention. The first is thrombocytopenia, a reduced number of platelets in the blood. This may cause the patient to bleed or bruise easily, so the patient's platelet count needs to be closely monitored and necessary precautions taken. This is followed by neutropenia, a decrease in the number of neutrophils in the blood. This may increase the patient's risk of infection, so patients' blood indicators need to be monitored regularly while using Rytelo.
In addition, infusion-related reactions may occur when using Rytelo, that is, allergies or adverse reactions that occur during the injection of the drug. This may manifest as red and swollen skin, difficulty breathing, nausea, and other symptoms. Attention also needs to be paid to the toxic effects of Rytelo on embryos and fetuses. If side effects or discomfort occur, please communicate with your doctor in time so that the treatment plan can be adjusted in time.
