What disease is cycloserine used to treat?
Cycloserine (Cycloserine) is an antibiotic mainly used to treat tuberculosis, especially tuberculosis strains that are resistant to other anti-tuberculosis drugs. Tuberculosis is an infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mycobacterium tuberculosis) that primarily affects the lungs but can also involve other parts of the body such as the kidneys, bones, and central nervous system. With the increase in drug-resistant tuberculosis bacteria, cycloserine has played an important role in the treatment of multidrug-resistant and extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB andXDR-TB).

Cycloserine works by inhibiting the synthesis of the cell wall of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Specifically, it competitively inhibits two key enzymes - D-alanine synthase and D-alanine ligase. These enzymes are essential for the synthesis of bacterial cell walls. Therefore, the action of cycloserine causes bacteria to be unable to maintain their structure and survival, thereby achieving the effect of inhibiting and killing bacteria.
In addition to tuberculosis, cycloserine is used in some cases to treat other types of bacterial infections, but this use is rare. Its unique mechanism also gives it potential use in certain neurological infections, particularly because cycloserine is able to penetrate the blood-brain barrier. However, the main and most widely recognized use of cycloserine remains the treatment of tuberculosis.
Cycloserine should be used with caution as it may cause a variety of side effects, especially symptoms related to the nervous system. Common side effects include headache, insomnia, anxiety, depression, confusion and seizures. These neurotoxic effects may be more severe at high doses or with long-term use. Therefore, the use of cycloserine usually requires blood concentration monitoring and dose adjustment based on the patient's specific conditions. In addition, patients taking cycloserine should undergo regular neurological evaluation to allow early detection and management of possible side effects.
