How many months should I take clofazimine?
Clofazimine (Clofazimine) is a drug mainly used to treat leprosy and multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB). The length of treatment depends on the specific type of disease and the patient's condition.
Leprosy treatment
For leprosy, clofazimine is often used as part of multidrug therapy (MDT), in combination with rifampicin and dapsone. The leprosy treatment options recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) are as follows:

1.Paucibacillary leprosy (PB): The standard treatment course for patients with paucibacillary leprosy is 6 months. During the 6 months, the patient took dapsone daily and rifampicin and clofazimine once a month.
2.Multibacillary leprosy (MB): The standard treatment course for patients with multibacillary leprosy is 12 months. During these 12 months, the patient took dapsone and clofazimine daily and rifampin and clofazimine once a month.
Due to the chronic nature of leprosy, patients need to adhere to a complete course of treatment and continue taking medication even after symptoms have subsided to ensure complete cure and prevent recurrence.
Clofazimine is also used as part of a multidrug combination therapy in the treatment of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis. The treatment regimen for MDR-TB is more complex, and the course of treatment is usually long. Depending on the patient's specific situation and the drug resistance of the tuberculosis strain, it may need to last 18 to 24 months, or even longer. The use of clofazimine in this condition requires strict medical supervision to ensure the effectiveness and safety of the drug.
A significant side effect of clofazimine is skin pigmentation, causing the skin to turn dark red or black. This pigmentation is usually reversible, but it may take months or even years to return to normal skin tone. Other possible side effects include gastrointestinal upset, dry eyes, and blurred vision. In rare cases, clofazimine may cause more serious side effects, such as heart problems, so regular medical testing is needed during use.
