When is the best time to take Opicapone

Opicapone (Opicapone) is an important auxiliary drug in the treatment of Parkinson's disease. The optimal taking time is based on the drug's pharmacokinetic properties and the patient's daily habits. Opicapone, which comes in capsule form, is a COMT (catechol-O-methyltransferase) inhibitor used as an add-on (adjuvant) treatment to levodopa/carbidopa in patients with Parkinson's disease who experience "off" episodes.

Opicapone works by increasing the amount of levodopa that reaches the brain, prolonging the time it is effective. Opicapone does this by blocking the COMT enzyme that breaks down levodopa in the blood. The recommended time to take Opicapone is once daily before bed and at least one hour after a meal. It is also not recommended to eat within one hour of taking Opicapone.

Taking it before bedtime ensures that the drug is released stably during the night so that the drug concentration reaches a certain level before the patient wakes up the next morning, helping to reduce the possible "shutdown" symptoms that may occur in the morning. In addition, taking it before going to bed also avoids the problem of forgetting or missing medication that may be caused by daytime activities, and improves treatment compliance.

Take Opicapone at least one hour after a meal to reduce the impact of food on drug absorption. Studies have shown that high-fat or high-calorie meals will significantly reduce the Cmax (maximum plasma concentration) and AUC (area under the drug-time curve) of opicapone, thereby weakening its therapeutic effect. Therefore, staggering the time of taking medication with food can help maintain the effective concentration of the drug in the body. Avoiding eating within one hour after taking Opicapone is also to avoid the interaction between food and medicine in the gastrointestinal tract and ensure that the medicine can be fully absorbed and exert its intended effect.
