Imetelstat manual
Indications: Imetelstat is indicated for the treatment of certain types of myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) that are associated with transfusion-dependent anemia and are unresponsive or unacceptable to other therapies for the treatment of MDS. Imetelstat belongs to a class of drugs called telomerase inhibitors. It works by blocking the production of unhealthy red blood cells.
Usage and dosage:
Usual adult dose for myelodysplastic syndromes: 7.1 mg/kg IV every 4 weeks
Treatment Duration: If the patient does not experience a reduction in red blood cell transfusion burden after 24 weeks of treatment or if unacceptable toxicity occurs
SIDE EFFECTS: Tell your healthcare provider immediately if you have: bruising, unusual bleeding; nosebleeds, any bleeding that doesn't stop; pain or burning when urinating; blood in vomitus; bloody or tarry stools; diarrhea, stomach pain; bone or joint pain; redness; high blood pressure; chest pain not related to the heart; or fever, cough, chills, discomfort, tiredness, weakness. If you have certain side effects, your treatment with imetelstat may be changed, delayed, or permanently stopped.
Common side effects of imetelstat may include: abnormal lab results; headache; muscle, joint, or bone pain; tiredness; or bacterial, or viral infection. This is not a complete list of side effects and other side effects may occur.
It should be noted that the incidence and severity of these side effects may vary depending on individual differences, treatment dose, duration of treatment and other factors.
Caution:Imetelstat can make you bleed more easily, even from minor injuries. If your bleeding doesn't stop, contact your doctor. Bleeding can also occur inside your body, such as in your stomach, intestines, or brain. You may be more susceptible to infections, even serious or fatal infections. Call your doctor if you develop flu symptoms, cough, night sweats, neck stiffness, confusion, or vision problems.
Before taking this medication, tell your doctor if you have or have had any of the following: easy bruising, unusual bleeding; or an active or chronic infection.
May cause pregnancy problems such as miscarriage or harm an unborn baby. You may need to take a pregnancy test to make sure you are not pregnant. Use effective contraception during imetelstat and for at least 1 week after the last dose. If you are pregnant, tell your doctor.
You may have more difficulty getting pregnant while using imetelstat. You should still use birth control to prevent pregnancy because this medication may harm your unborn baby.
Do not breastfeed while you are using this medicine and for at least 1 week after your last dose
Storage: Store this medication in its original container in the refrigerator, away from moisture, heat, and light. Do not freeze.
