How many years will it take to recover from imatinib?
Imatinib (Imatinib) is a targeted drug widely used to treat chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) and gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST). Although it has shown good efficacy in many patients, how long it takes to achieve long-term control or cure of the disease depends on many factors, including the type of disease, treatment response and individual differences.

For chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML), imatinib blocks the growth of leukemia cells by inhibiting the BCR-ABL tyrosine kinase. In most patients, imatinib can significantly reduce the number of leukemia cells and achieve complete hematological remission (abnormal cells are no longer detected in the blood) or molecular remission (no detectable BCR-ABL gene mutation). Some patients may maintain this state of remission after several years of treatment, but this does not mean that the drug can be discontinued. Most patients need to take imatinib long-term or even lifelong to maintain disease control and prevent recurrence. Usually, doctors will recommend taking it for at least 3-5 years and regularly evaluating the effectiveness. If a patient is stable in long-term remission, doctors may consider reducing the dose or trying to discontinue the drug under strict monitoring, but this only applies to a small number of patients.
In gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST), imatinib can significantly shrink tumors, especially in the postoperative adjuvant setting. For patients with a chance of surgical resection, imatinib is usually taken for 3 years or longer to reduce the risk of recurrence. For inoperable patients, imatinib may need to be taken long-term, even lifelong, to control tumor growth. The length of treatment depends on the size and location of the tumor and the patient's tolerance of the drug.
Overall, treatment with imatinib is usually long-term, especially in the treatment ofCML. Although it can control the disease and some patients can achieve complete remission, the risk of discontinuation is high, so most patients require long-term medication to maintain the effect.
