Indications: Cycloserine (seromycin) is an antibiotic used to treat tuberculosis (TB) and urinary tract infection (UTI) in adults. It's usually only used to treat drug-resistant infections (when typical antibiotics don't work).

Mechanism of Action: Cycloserine acts as an antibiotic by inhibiting bacterial cell wall biosynthesis. The second enzyme is involved in the formation of the ATPdependentD-alanine-D-alaninedipeptide bond D- in the resulting D-. If both enzymes are inhibited, D-alanine residues cannot be formed and previously formed D-alanine molecules cannot be linked. This effectively leads to the inhibition of peptidoglycan synthesis.

Recommendations for use in psychiatric settings are based on partial NMDA receptor agonism, which can improve neuroplasticity in experimental animals. As mentioned above, the extent of clinical usefulness is very unclear and is still being explored.
