Cycloserine instructions, indications, usage and dosage, side effects, price and listing status
Indications: Cycloserine (seromycin) is an antibiotic used to treat tuberculosis (TB) and urinary tract infection (UTI) in adults. It's usually only used to treat drug-resistant infections (when typical antibiotics don't work).
Mechanism of Action: Cycloserine acts as an antibiotic by inhibiting bacterial cell wall biosynthesis. As a cyclic analog ofD-alanine, cycloserine antagonizes two key enzymes important in the cytoplasmic stage of peptidoglycan synthesis: alanine racemase (Alr) and D-alanine:D-alanine ligase (Ddl). The first enzyme is a pyridoxal5'-phosphate-dependent enzyme that converts L-alanine to the D-alanine form. The second enzyme is involved in the formation of the ATPdependentD-alanine-D-alaninedipeptide bond D- in the resulting D-. If both enzymes are inhibited, D-alanine residues cannot be formed and previously formed D-alanine molecules cannot be linked. This effectively leads to the inhibition of peptidoglycan synthesis.
Recommendations for use in psychiatric settings are based on partial NMDA receptor agonism, which can improve neuroplasticity in experimental animals. As mentioned above, the extent of clinical usefulness is very unclear and is still being explored.
Dosage: Starting dose is 250 mg PO every 12 hours for 2 weeks. Your doctor will adjust your dose based on the levels of cycloserine (seromycin) in your blood. Common dosages range from 500 mg to 1 gram per day, divided into smaller doses throughout the day.
SIDE EFFECTS: Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Cycloserine may cause serious side effects. Contact your doctor right away if you have: seizure; confusion, depression, unusual thoughts or behaviors; severe drowsiness, severe dizziness, or spinning sensation; swelling, rapid weight gain; hyperactivity, shaking, or shaking; difficulty speaking; or muscle weakness.
Common side effects of cycloserine may include: dizziness, drowsiness; mood changes; headache; or numbness, tingling, or burning pain. This is not a complete list of side effects, and other side effects may occur, and patients should seek medical attention immediately if they experience any discomfort while taking cycloserine.
Price and listing status: Today, cycloserine has been launched in China and has successfully been listed as a Class B medical insurance item, bringing new treatment options to the majority of patients. Each box of medicine contains 10 pills, and the dosage of each pill is 250 mg. The market price is about 300 yuan, which is relatively reasonable.
