What are the early symptoms of basal cell carcinoma?
Basal cell carcinoma, as a malignant tumor originating from the basal cells of the skin, although it grows slowly and usually does not spread rapidly, its early manifestations still deserve our high attention. This cancer is common in sun-exposed areas such as the face, chest, shoulders, arms, or legs. Early symptoms of this cancer may appear as red patches or irritated areas that may be crusted, itchy, or may not cause significant discomfort.
In the early stages of basal cell carcinoma, patients may notice some unusual lumps or nodules on their skin. These bumps or nodules may be pearly or clear, come in a variety of colors, including pink, red, or white, and have a shiny sheen. They may be firm in texture, have clear or irregular edges, and sometimes have a small sore or scab in the center. It is important to note that these lumps or nodules may also be pigmented and appear tan, black, or brown. Especially in people of color, such pigmented lumps or nodules may be mistaken for ordinary moles, thereby delaying diagnosis and treatment.
In addition to the above-mentioned masses or nodules, other skin abnormalities may also appear in the early stage of basal cell carcinoma, such as micro-erodes, scabs or superficial ulcers on the skin surface. These symptoms may occur alone or together, and are usually not accompanied by severe pain or itching. However, these seemingly inconspicuous symptoms may be early signs of basal cell carcinoma.
Therefore, if the above abnormal symptoms occur in areas exposed to sunlight, such as the face, chest, shoulders, arms, or legs, especially those skin lesions that persist, are difficult to heal, or gradually increase in size, we should be highly alert to the possibility of basal cell carcinoma. Prompt medical treatment for skin examination and, if necessary, biopsy and pathology examination are the keys to confirming the diagnosis of basal cell carcinoma. Early detection and early treatment are of great significance for improving the cure rate, reducing the recurrence rate and improving the prognosis of patients.
