Can Vigabatrin cause blindness?
Vigabatrin does have significant efficacy in the treatment of epilepsy and infantile spasms, but the most concerning of its side effects is visual damage, especially the possible visual field defects. This visual field defect is usually bilateral, irreversible, and predominantly peripheral visual field loss. The severity of visual field loss may increase with the dosage and duration of medication, so patients taking the medication for a long time need to be particularly cautious.

Currently, there is no evidence that Vigabatrin can directly cause complete blindness, but the peripheral visual field loss caused by it will cause great inconvenience to patients' daily life, affecting the breadth of visual field and peripheral visual perception. The risk of visual impairment is higher in infants and children and may not be detected until symptoms worsen because they have difficulty describing visual changes. Therefore, parents and health care professionals need to regularly monitor the vision of these young patients.
To minimize the risk of visual impairment, patients are advised to have regular vision exams during treatment. It is usually recommended to conduct vision tests at the beginning of medication and every 3 to 6 months thereafter, so as to detect visual field defects as early as possible. In addition, the dosage of Vigabatrin should be reasonably controlled under the guidance of a doctor, and blind increase in dosage and long-term use should be avoided. Once vision problems are discovered, patients need to communicate with their doctors promptly so that adjustments can be made. Medication may need to be discontinued or other treatment options may need to be used.
In general, Vigabatrin may cause irreversible visual field loss, but through regular vision monitoring and rational medication management, the risk of this side effect can be effectively reduced.
