Is Merkel cell tumor a rare disease?
Merkel Cell Carcinoma (MCC) is a rare but highly aggressive skin cancer that is indeed classified as a rare disease. It primarily affects Merkel cells in the skin, which are responsible for sensing stimulation from light touch. According to epidemiological statistics, the incidence of Merkel cell tumor is extremely low, approximately 0.2-0.5 per million per year. However, its incidence has increased in recent years as the population ages and diagnostic techniques improve.
1.The definition of rare diseases and Merkel cell tumor
Rare diseases generally refer to diseases with a low incidence rate, and definitions vary according to different countries. For example, in the United States, a disease is considered rare if it affects fewer than 200,000 people (about 0.65 per 1,000 people). In China, a rare disease is defined as having less than 100,000 people affected. Merkel cell tumor meets these criteria and is therefore classified as a rare disease.

2.Characteristics of Merkel cell tumor
Rarity: Although the total number of cases is small, its malignancy is high, and its mortality rate is significantly higher than that of common skin cancers, such as basal cell carcinoma or squamous cell carcinoma.
High-risk groups: Mainly seen in the elderly, people with low immune function, and people who have been exposed to ultraviolet rays for a long time.
Regional distribution differences: Merkel cell tumors are more common in Caucasians and rarer in Asians.
3.Challenges in diagnosis and treatment
Because Merkel cell tumor is very rare, many clinicians have limited understanding of it, which can easily lead to misdiagnosis or missed diagnosis. Furthermore, despite its rarity, the disease progresses rapidly and patients are often diagnosed at an advanced stage. Therefore, early recognition and treatment are key to improving patient outcomes.
As a rare disease, Merkel cell tumor has attracted the attention of medical institutions and research institutions in various countries. Internationally, some rare disease organizations and research foundations have listed it as a key research object to provide support and resources to patients.
