Is removal of thyroid cancer curable?

Thyroid cancer is a malignant tumor originating from thyroid follicular epithelial or parafollicular epithelial cells, but its prognosis is usually better than other malignant tumors. With appropriate treatment, the 20 annual survival rate of thyroid cancer patients can exceed 90%, which reflects the relatively benign characteristics of thyroid cancer among malignant tumors.

Surgical removal is the main treatment for thyroid cancer. For most patients with thyroid cancer, especially those with papillary thyroid cancer whose tumors exceed 1cm in diameter, current American Thyroid Association (ATA) guidelines recommend a total or near-total thyroidectomy. The purpose of this surgical approach is to remove tumor tissue as completely as possible, reduce the risk of recurrence, and improve the patient's survival rate.

However, surgical removal does not mean the end of thyroid cancer treatment. After surgery, patients also need to undergo a series of monitoring and treatment measures. Doctors will develop a personalized follow-up plan based on the patient's specific conditions, including regular thyroid function tests and ultrasound examinations, in order to promptly detect and deal with any possible recurrence or metastasis.

In addition, the prognosis of thyroid cancer is also affected by many factors, such as the patient's age, gender, tumor size, grade, and whether it is accompanied by lymph node metastasis. Therefore, each patient's specific situation needs to be comprehensively considered to develop the most appropriate treatment plan.

Overall, while surgical resection is a critical step in the treatment of thyroid cancer, a comprehensive treatment and management strategy is equally important. With comprehensive treatment and good lifestyle habits, many thyroid cancer patients are able to achieve long-term survival and maintain a high quality of life.
