What is thyroid cancer

Thyroid cancer is a malignant tumor that originates in thyroid tissue, a vital gland in the human body that is shaped like a butterfly and sits at the base of the neck, just below the Adam's apple. This gland is responsible for producing and releasing thyroid hormones, which play an integral role in regulating the body's heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature, and maintaining normal weight.

In the early stages of thyroid cancer, patients may not experience any abnormalities or discomfort at all, making early detection of the disease challenging. However, as the tumor grows, a range of signs and symptoms may develop, including a lump or swelling in the neck area, changes in the voice (such as hoarseness or lowered pitch), and difficulty swallowing. The appearance of these symptoms often indicates that the disease has progressed to a certain extent and requires timely medical examination.

It is important to note that thyroid cancer is not a single type of disease but encompasses multiple subtypes, each with different growth rates and invasiveness. Fortunately, most types of thyroid cancer grow relatively slowly and respond well to treatment, so the prognosis is generally optimistic. However, there are some highly aggressive types of thyroid cancer that require more aggressive and complex treatment strategies.

In recent years, the incidence of thyroid cancer has shown an upward trend, a change partly attributed to the continuous advancement of medical imaging technology. As scanning technologies such as CT and MRI become more sophisticated, doctors can more easily detect smaller thyroid cancers during tests for other health problems. Such thyroid cancers discovered unexpectedly during routine exams are called incidental thyroid cancers. Fortunately, these thyroid cancers diagnosed with advanced imaging techniques tend to be in earlier stages and more responsive to treatment, improving overall cure and survival rates.
