Interactions between rasagiline (Alzilate) and other drugs and drug safety
Rasagiline (Rasagiline) is a monoamine oxidase B type (MAO-B) inhibitor commonly used in the treatment of Parkinson's disease. Because its pharmacological effects involve neurotransmitter metabolism, rasagiline's interactions with other drugs are complex. The first thing to note is that rasagiline differs from other antidepressants, especially selective 5-serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs< span>), tricyclic antidepressants, and other MAO inhibitors may increase the risk of serotonin syndrome, manifesting as severe symptoms such as high fever, muscle stiffness, and confusion. Therefore, combined use should be avoided clinically, and if necessary, a sufficient washout period should be allowed between drug changes.
When rasagiline is used together with sympathomimetic drugs or cold medicines containing ephedrine, pseudoephedrine, etc., it may also cause a significant increase in blood pressure and even cause a hypertensive crisis. This is because MAO-Binhibition may affect norepinephrine metabolism, thereby amplifying the pressor response. Therefore, patients should try to avoid using over-the-counter medicines containing the above ingredients while taking the medicine. When prescribing, doctors also need to fully understand whether the patient is taking other central stimulant or vasopressor drugs at the same time to avoid increasing the risk of medication.

When used together with levodopa (Levodopa), rasagiline can enhance the effect of treating Parkinson's disease and reduce the dosage of levodopa. However, combined use may also exacerbate adverse effects such as dyskinesia, hallucinations, or hypotension. Therefore, during combined treatment, the dose of levodopa should be dynamically adjusted according to the patient's clinical response to balance efficacy and safety. At the same time, rasagiline has serious interactions with certain analgesics such as pethidine (Pethidine), which may induce central nervous system toxic reactions, and is a strictly contraindicated combination.
In terms of medication safety, patients should avoid excessive intake of foods high in tyramine (Tyramine) while taking rasagiline, such as some pickled products and fermented foods, because these foods may interact with the inhibitory effect of MAO and cause blood pressure fluctuations. Although the inhibitory effect of rasagiline on MAO-A is weak, caution is still required. At the same time, before using rasagiline, patients should inform their doctors in detail about all the drugs they are taking, including Chinese herbal medicines, health products and over-the-counter drugs, to avoid the risk of potential drug interactions. Through appropriate drug combination and monitoring, the efficacy of rasagiline can be maximized while reducing the probability of serious adverse events.
