(deferasirox) is an oral iron chelator. Its primary use is to reduce chronic iron overload in patients receiving chronic transfusions for conditions such as beta-thalassemia and other chronic anemias. This is the first oral drug approved for this purpose in the United States. Deferasirox was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in November 2005. According to the FDA (May 2007), renal failure and cytopenias have been reported in patients receiving deferasirox oral suspension tablets. It is approved in the EU by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) for patients aged 6 years and older with chronic iron overload from repeated blood transfusions.

Research shows that deferasirox is effective in removing iron. It can more effectively reduce iron deposition in patients, prevent and treat iron deposition in the heart, and significantly improve the heart function of patients. As a simple, safe and effective iron chelator, deferasirox will be widely used in clinical practice to better meet the iron removal treatment needs of patients with iron overload.

The recommended starting daily dose is 20 mg/kg. For patients who receive monthly transfusions of more than 14 mL/kg of packed red blood cells (ie, more than 4 units/month in adults) and who need to reduce excess iron exposure, a starting dose of 30 mg/kg/day may be considered. For patients who receive monthly transfusions of less than 7 mL/kg of packed red blood cells (i.e., less than 2 units/month in adults) and who need to maintain body iron balance, a starting dose of 10 mg/kg/day may be considered. In patients who have already responded well to deferoxamine therapy, an initial dose equivalent to half the deferoxamine dose may be considered. (For example, a patient receiving deferoxamine 40 mg/kg/day, 5 days a week or equivalent, can start with 20 mg/kg if switched to deferasirox.) It is best to take it on an empty stomach before taking it. If it is before a meal, take it on an empty stomach for at least 30 minutes, once a day, preferably at the same time every day. This can increase the absorption of medicines by our patients and will not reduce the therapeutic effect due to food.
