Functional dyspepsia (FD) refers to symptoms originating in the gastric and duodenal regions and lacking any evidence of organic, systemic, or metabolic disease. The latest data shows that nearly 40% of the general population in Western countries suffer from indigestion symptoms, which significantly reduces the quality of life. A small number of people are caused by gastric ulcers, which can be treated by eradication of Helicobacter pylori. About 20% of symptomatic people have gastroesophageal reflux disease, which can be effectively treated with proton pump inhibitors. However, most people with indigestion have FD, and the treatment of FD is still challenging. On June 6, 2013, Japan took the lead in approving the world's first FD treatment drug (acotiamide, trade name: Acofide). This product is approved for the treatment of postprandial fullness, epigastric distension, and early satiety caused by FD. So, what is the efficacy of acotiamide hydrochloride tablets?

The efficacy of acotiamide hydrochloride tablets

A phase II trial conducted in Japan studied the efficacy and safety of acotiamide hydrochloride tablets for 48 weeks in patients with FD. 405 patients took acotiamide hydrochloride tablets 100 mg three times a day for 48 weeks. The overall efficacy improvement rate reached 26.1% in the first week, and further improvement can be achieved as time increases. It reached 60.6% in the 8th week and has been maintained ever since. The incidence rate of adverse drug reactions was 11.5%, most of which were mild, with only one patient having elevated alanine aminotransferase.

Acotiamide hydrochloride tablets side effects

Mainly urticaria, constipation, rash, vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, etc. were observed in multiple trials.
