Mesalazine (Salofalk) can achieve local anti-inflammatory effects and needs to be used under the guidance of a doctor.

Mesalazine (Salofalk) Indications

It is suitable for the treatment of acute attacks and maintenance of remission of the following diseases:

Mild to moderate ulcerative colitis.

Crohn's ileitis and colitis.

Mesalazine (Salofalk) usage and dosage

1. Adults and the elderly

Unless otherwise directed by a doctor, the recommended dosage is as follows (taken in 1-3 times a day):

(1) Acute phase treatment

Ulcerative colitis: 1.5-3g daily.

Crohn’s ileitis and colitis: 3–4.5g daily.

(2), Remission maintenance and long-term treatment

Ulcerative colitis: 1.5g daily.

Crohn’s ileitis and colitis: 1.5–3g daily.

2. Children over 6 years old (only applicable to ulcerative colitis)

(1), Acute phase treatment: 30–50 mg/kg body weight daily.

(2), Maintenance during remission period: 15–30 mg/kg body weight daily.

For those weighing ≤40kg, half the adult dose can be used, and for those >40kg, the full adult dose can be taken. The total daily dose should not exceed the maximum adult dose.

3. How to take the medicine

Swallow the tablet whole, do not chew or crush it, and take it with enough liquid. It is recommended to take it at least 1 hour before meals to facilitate gastric emptying.

4. Treatment course recommendations

During the acute attack period, medication needs to be taken regularly to achieve the desired effect. Usually, an acute attack of ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease can be relieved within 8 weeks.

5. Special circumstances

In rare cases, if the patient has undergone ileocecal resection or ileocecal valve resection, the undissolved tablets may be excreted with the feces due to the rapid intestinal passage.

6. Drug overdose

Data on mesalazine overdose are limited. Possible symptoms include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and salicylic acid poisoning. There is no specific antidote, and symptomatic and supportive treatment is recommended.

Mesalazine (Salofalk) Side Effects

1. Common adverse reactions (≥1%–<10%)

(1) Systemic: headache.

(2) Gastrointestinal tract: abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, indigestion, bloating, and worsening of ulcerative colitis.

(3) Skin: rash (including itching, urticaria).

2. Rare adverse reactions (<1%)

(1) Blood system: thrombocytopenia, aplastic anemia, hemolytic anemia.

(2) Hepatobiliary system: hepatitis, elevated liver enzymes, intrahepatic cholestasis, elevated bilirubin.

(3) Kidney: acute or chronic interstitial nephritis, renal insufficiency, renal failure, nephrotoxicity.

(4) Heart: pericarditis, myocarditis, pericardial effusion.

(5) Pulmonary: allergic and fibrotic pulmonary reactions, dyspnea, cough, bronchospasm, pleural effusion, alveolitis, pulmonary eosinophilia, and pneumonia.

(6) Nervous system: dizziness, abnormal sensation, peripheral neuropathy.

(7) Skin: hair loss, allergic rash, hyperhidrosis.

(8), Others: fever, allergic reaction, lupus-like syndrome, pancreatitis, pancolitis, neonatal diarrhea.

(9) Serious cutaneous adverse reactions (SCARs): including DRESS, Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS), and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN), which are rare but require immediate discontinuation.
