The number of patients with multidrug-resistant tuberculosis in my country has always been ranked second in the world. About 120,000 patients are born every day, accounting for more than 20% of newly discovered patients in the world. In recent years, the growth rate of patients has increased significantly, and many of them have developed drug-resistant tuberculosis bacteria due to repeated use of anti-tuberculosis drugs, which directly led to an increase in the incidence rate. In clinical treatment in recent years, the drug clofazimine has been mentioned, which is a drug that can inhibit the action of Mycobacterium mycobacterium and Mycobacterium leprae, and can produce complete sensitivity in multi-drug-resistant tuberculosis. So, how long should clofazimine be taken for pulmonary tuberculosis, and how much should it be used?

How long should you take clofazimine for tuberculosis?

Treatment of MDR-TB cases is lengthy and requires long-term use of clofazimine.

For drug-resistant tuberculosis, the total course of short-course therapy currently promoted by the World Health Organization in Bangladesh is 9-12 months, starting with an intensive treatment phase of 4-6 months, using seven drugs: gatifloxacin, kanamycin, prothionamide, clofazimine, high-dose isoniazid, pyrazinamide and ethambutol. Next is a five-month consolidation treatment phase, using four drugs: gatifloxacin, clofazimine, pyrazinamide and ethambutol. However, this short-course regimen is only applicable to patients who are sensitive to quinolones and second-line injection drugs. For those who are not sensitive to drugs, long-course therapy of at least 20 months is still used.

Clofazimine usage and dosage

Clofazimine has different usage and dosage for different situations:

For various types of dapsone-resistant leprosy: Clofazimine should be taken orally, with a dosage of 50 to 100ng each time. It only needs to be used once a day, usually in combination with one or several other anti-leprosy drugs.

Treatment of various types of dapsone-sensitive leprosy: If a combination of three drugs is used, clofazimine needs to be used for at least 2 years until the skin smear turns negative.

Treatment of other skin diseases: 100-400 mg orally daily, gradually reduce the dosage after the condition is controlled.
