Introduction: Topical corticosteroids reduce skin inflammation by preventing cells from producing inflammation-causing chemicals that are released in response to a variety of different triggers. Criborole reduces inflammation by more specifically inhibiting a specific enzyme called PDE4, which causes skin inflammation. And because criborole is not a TCS, it can be used over a longer period of time and in more delicate or thin-skinned areas of the body, such as the face, eyelids, genitals, or skin folds, where TCS use is not preferred.

Pharmacological mechanism

As a PDE-4 inhibitor, it increases intracellular cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) levels by inhibiting the activity of phosphodiesterase 4, thereby reducing the production of inflammatory mediators and exerting its anti-inflammatory effect. It is not a hormonal drug.

Topical corticosteroids (TCS) have powerful anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive effects by binding to intracellular glucocorticoid receptors, affecting gene transcription, inhibiting inflammatory responses, and reducing the production of inflammatory mediators. TCS is a hormonal drug.

Side Effects

Criborole is generally considered a safer treatment option because it does not contain hormones and therefore does not cause the side effects associated with long-term corticosteroid use, such as skin atrophy, pigmentation, and telangiectasia.

Although topical corticosteroids (TCS) are relatively safe for short-term use, long-term or inappropriate use may cause local skin problems and potential systemic side effects, especially for high-potency or ultra-potent TCS.

Scope of application

Criborole is suitable for patients with mild to moderate atopic dermatitis, especially for the face, folds or people who are sensitive to hormones, including infants and young children.

Topical corticosteroids (TCS) are widely used in the treatment of various skin inflammations. Different strengths of TCS are selected according to the severity of the disease. Severe inflammation may require more powerful TCS.

Treatment Cycles

Criborole may be more suitable for long-term maintenance therapy because there are no hormone-related restrictions on use. Topical corticosteroids (TCS) are generally recommended for short-term or intermittent use to reduce the risk of side effects.
