Dutasteride is a dual 5α-reductase blocker that blocks two 5α-reductase enzymes that catalyze the conversion of testosterone to produce DHT. (Anfida) is a new drug approved by the US Food and Drug Administration on October 9, 2002 for the treatment of prostate enlargement. The results of clinical trials for the treatment of hair loss are still awaiting FDA approval.

Dutasteride is the first and only dual 5-alpha reductase inhibitor for the treatment of prostatic hyperplasia, which improves urinary symptoms and reduces the risk of acute urinary retention episodes and related prostate surgery. Tamsulosin is an α-receptor blocker that can improve the symptoms of prostatic hyperplasia.

How to take Dutasteride (Anfida):

1. The recommended dosage for adults (including the elderly) is one tablet (0.5mg), once a day, orally. Capsules should be swallowed whole and should not be chewed or opened as the contents may irritate the oropharyngeal mucosa. Capsules can be taken with or without food. Although symptomatic improvement is observed early in treatment, it takes 6 months to achieve therapeutic effects.

2. Kidney damage:

The effect of renal impairment on the pharmacokinetics of dutasteride (Afeta) has not been studied. No dose adjustment is required in patients with renal impairment.

3. Liver damage:

The effect of hepatic impairment on the pharmacokinetics of Aflida has not been studied. However, patients with mild or moderate hepatic impairment should use Dutasteride (Afida) with caution. Dutasteride is contraindicated in patients with severe hepatic impairment.
