Silodosin, also known as Silodosin, Uniflex, and Silodyx, is an α1-adrenergic receptor blocker in clinical practice. Silodosin is currently on the market in China and has also been included in my country's medical insurance.

Silodosin Medication Guide

Applicable Population

Silodosin is suitable for urinary disorders caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia in adult men, such as frequent urination, urgency, and dysuria. Not recommended for use by women, children or those allergic to drug ingredients.

Mechanism of action

Silodosin can selectively act on α1A-adrenergic receptors in the prostate and urethra, reducing smooth muscle contraction to relieve symptoms.

Common dosage

The recommended adult dose of silodosin is 8 mg once a day, and patients are advised to take it after meals.

Due to different physical conditions of patients, please consult a professional doctor for the dosage of medication and do not blindly take medication on your own.

How to take

Patients should swallow the silodosin capsules whole and should not chew or open the silodosin capsules.

If you forget to take the medicine or miss a dose, you can take it more than 12 hours before the next dose. Otherwise, you should skip this dose and do not take a double dose at the same time.

Drug Recommendations for Special Populations

Elderly Patients

It is not necessary to adjust the dosage of silodosin in elderly patients, but their blood pressure needs to be closely monitored.

Patients with liver and kidney abnormalities

Silodosin should be used with caution in patients with hepatic insufficiency, and silodosin is contraindicated in patients with severe renal insufficiency.

Other patients

Patients with a history of hypotension and taking antihypertensive drugs or anticoagulants need to use silodosin under the guidance of a doctor.

What side effects does Silodosin cause?

Dizziness and nasal congestion

Some of the patients have experienced varying degrees of clinical symptoms such as dizziness, nasal congestion, or runny nose.

If symptoms persist or worsen, you can promptly contact your doctor to make corresponding adjustments to the appropriate dosage and use time of the drug. Avoid driving or operating complex machinery after initial use.

The pictures are from public channels (such as the official website of the FDA, the official website of the original drug manufacturer, etc.) and are for reference only.

Abnormal ejaculation

Silodosin may cause retrograde ejaculation, which occurs when semen flows into the bladder instead of ejaculating normally.

It does not affect sexual function but may cause discomfort. If it is unacceptable, other treatment options can be considered.

Orthostatic hypotension

After taking silodosin, a small number of patients may experience a drop in blood pressure when standing, manifesting as dizziness or darkening of the eyes.

If the above-mentioned discomfort occurs and the patient changes position slowly, avoid standing up suddenly. If symptoms such as syncope or long-term hypotension occur, you should seek medical attention immediately to see whether the medication needs to be stopped.

Gastrointestinal discomfort

Some patients may also experience mild adverse reactions such as diarrhea or abdominal pain after taking silodosin.

Taking medication after meals can reduce gastrointestinal irritation.

Allergic Reaction

A small number of patients may experience adverse reactions such as rash, itching, or facial swelling due to an allergic reaction to this drug.

Once it occurs, you should stop taking the drug immediately and seek medical treatment, and use antihistamines or corticosteroids for treatment.

What are the other precautions for Silodosin

Drug interactions

Long-term or high-dose use of Silodosin may be used simultaneously with some common antihypertensive drugs, antifungal drugs or certain antibiotics, which may produce adverse pharmacokinetic effects or increase the risk of adverse reactions.

Patients should inform their doctors about all prescription, over-the-counter, and supplements they are taking.

Preoperative Medication Instructions

Patients who require cataract or other surgeries must inform their doctors in advance that they are taking silodosin. Silodosin may increase the risk of intraoperative iris floppy syndrome.

Patients taking silodosin for a long time should regularly monitor changes in blood pressure, liver and kidney function, and prostate symptoms. However, if typical symptoms such as difficulty urinating or hematuria occur, you should seek medical treatment in time to eliminate the interference of other possible diseases and ensure that the real symptoms of prostatic hyperplasia can be effectively treated and controlled.
